Donington on Bain

Donington on Bain Village

Donington on Bain is a picturesque village situated on the Viking Way, set in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds. With 250 dwellings in or around the village housing a diverse population Donington is equidistant from the market towns of Louth, Horncastle and Market Rasen and is popular with walkers, cyclists and tourists alike.

The thriving village community features a successful primary school, a pub offering accommodation, two stores that offer a Post Office and a café specialising in local products, and numerous holiday and bed & breakfast accommodation. The Village Hall hosts numerous classes and social events, including Pilates, Yoga and Whist evenings and is also available for private hire functions

St. Andrew’s Church, Donington on Bain

St. Andrew’s is a Grade 2 listed building, dating back to the 13th Century. It sits in  an elevated position in the heart of the village. The present un-buttressed Norman style tower was built in 1779 and the font in the vestry area is of late Saxon or early Norman work. It could have been moved from a nearby older church.

Regular monthly services are Holy Communion and Celtic Morning Prayer and a variety of seasonal services take place throughout the year. The church seats about 80 people and has a good relationship with the local primary school which is situated opposite.

Although the churchyard is no longer used for burials, a corner is now being developed as “God’s acre” as part of a national scheme to encourage wildlife, flora and fauna. Volunteers gather once a week to develop this area for everyone to enjoy. Children from the school love helping out and use it for experiencing nature. A bench has been donated in memory of a well-known local farmer, providing a vantage point for observing the wildlife.
