Scamblesby with Cawkwell

Scamblesby Village

Scamblesby is situated between the market towns of Louth and Horncastle, in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds. It is a pleasant rural village dating back to the time of the Viking invasion, and although it is not now chiefly inhabited by those involved in agricultural employment, there are still many large farms in the area.

With a growing population of around 230 the village has a successful Church of England Primary School and a Village Hall that hosts some well attended clubs and groups including Keep Fit, Gardening, Art, Sewing and Astronomy. It is a desirable area to live and there are currently several new housing developments in the village which will hopefully enhance the existing community.

The Viking Way passes through the village, which is beloved by walkers, and there is also a popular Riding School and Livery stables within the village. In addition to the beautiful old Church the village also contains a modern Chapel, both of which strive to serve the needs of the local community.

St. Martin’s Church, Scamblesby

A Church has existed on the current site since medieval times, being re-built twice. Records date back to 1569 and the current Grade II Listed building was erected in 1893. Architectural features include ancient pew ends, pillars (believed to be Norman) and a fine stained glass window featuring St. Martin offering his cloak to a beggar.

The Church is first and foremost a place where the peace of God can be felt and shared. This depends on a balance between the needs of the living and respect for the dead. There are two Church Wardens and a small, but active, VCC Committee who care deeply for the Church and our Parishioners. The church is solvent financially, supported by a number of ‘regular givers’ and periodic fund raising events. Close links are maintained with the local Church of England Primary School, which itself holds a monthly celebration service at the church.
