Burgh on Bain and Girsby Villages
Burgh on Bain is situated on both sides of the A157, the Lincoln to Louth road. The hamlet of Girsby lies to the north of the church. Total population is approximately 170 with the large majority of these in Burgh on Bain. Children attend primary schools in Donington on Bain and Scamblesby, and secondary schools in Louth and Market Rasen. The population includes farming families, young working families and older or retired adults. Bus services run between Louth and Lincoln every few hours. Being close to the Viking Way the area is popular with walkers.

St Helen’s Church, Burgh on Bain
St Helen’s Church is a Grade 2 Iisted building that was constructed in stages during the 11th, 13th, 14th and 16th centuries with major restoration in 1871-1872 by the Fox family, who owned Girsby at that time. The church has gradually been adapted to serve the local area as a community centre while remaining open for regular worship. The north side pews have been removed to provide an open area for tables and chairs, a small servery and a disabled lavatory. A recent grant (see below) has allowed the updating of the heating to make the church building usable all year round for different events.

News
December 2025: We’re pleased to announce that The Friends of St Helen’s Church & Community Centre has received a grant of £15,000 from the East Lindsey Investment Fund which will allow us to replace the (defunct!) heating at the church. We can now use the building as both church and community centre in the cooler months and run many more community events. We have installed modern infrared electric heating which is suitable for an ancient church building and allows us to use green electricity to run it.
As the only public space in the village, and with full agreement of the Village Church Committee and Parochial Church Council, The Friends charity can now meet the needs of the community in the village which previously required car journeys (or meant no event!).
