Burgh on Bain and Girsby

Burgh on Bain and Girsby Villages

Burgh on Bain is situated on both sides of the A157, the Lincoln to Louth road. The hamlet of Girsby lies to the north of the church. Total population is approximately 170 with the large majority of these in Burgh on Bain. Children attend primary schools in Donington on Bain and Scamblesby, and secondary schools in Louth and Market Rasen. The population includes farming families, young working families and older or retired adults. Bus services run between Louth and Lincoln every few hours. Being close to the Viking Way the area is popular with walkers.

St Helen’s Church, Burgh on Bain

St Helen’s Church is a Grade 2 Iisted building that was constructed in stages during the 11th, 13th, 14th and 16th centuries with major restoration in 1871-1872 by the Fox family, who owned Girsby at that time. Recently, the north side pews have been removed to provide an open area for tables and chairs, a small  servery and a disabled lavatory, a new boiler and radiators to enable social functions. The church is open most days in summer but the key is available when closed from Hill Cottage, Mill Lane, opposite the church.
